I realize this is super old, but I thought I would add something. I use these nifty things called Shout color catchers. They work well enough so that I've cut my load amount from 3 to 2 - clothes and towels. I even wash my reds WITH my whites, without anything happening. I don't know if these sheets have worked as well for anyone else, but I've found them to be pretty convenient.

I'm the laziest clothes-washer there is. I put my colors and darks all in the same wash and put them on warm/cold. They've never bleed once, not even when I'm super lazy and was my whites with them.

If you use a detergent that's specially made for washing in cold water, you can put all your colors together. Colors don't bleed in cold water.
It's worked for me so far.

Yes, putting away laundry is the most difficult task. Talk to my overflowing laundry basket.

True! Actually, I've never been very good at that step. :) I mostly just kept clean laundry on a chair and dirty laundry in the hamper. I don't recommend that method.
